Car Oil Types

With so many choices available on the market for engine oil, choosing the right one can be confusing and even overwhelming. Some oils are blends, while others are more straightforward. There are different properties associated with the various oils that can make one a better choice for your vehicle than another. Additionally, you may need to change the kind of oil that you use down the road based on the car's age and other factors such as cost.

What Engine Oils are Available?

Engine oils on the market break down into four categories. They are made of a base and are often enhanced with other ingredients such as additives, chemicals, dispersants, and detergents. Additives are one of the most common additions to an engine. They have several protective elements that can preserve an engine and maximize performance. Additives can provide an engine with some preventative maintenance as well by reducing the risk of corrosion and preventing an engine from leaking oil. Engine oils may also aid high-mileage vehicles and protect against damage from exposure to high heat or freezing cold temperatures. Engine oil comes in four main forms: synthetic, conventional, synthetic, conventional blend, and high mileage.

Synthetic Oil

Synthetic oil is a good oil for a wide range of cars. It can withstand summer and winter temperatures, which makes it a preferred engine oil for people who need the added protection against freezing temperatures and hot summer temperatures. Synthetic oil is chemically processed and specially formulated for performance enhancement and other benefits. Synthetic oil may be used with other engine oils, as it is one of the most expensive types of oil on its own.

Synthetic Blend Oil

Synthetic blend oils are popular for the fact that they provide many great benefits to your vehicle, but they are not as expensive as synthetic oils. Synthetic blend oils may also contain additives to improve engine performance and extend the engine's longevity. Synthetic blend motor oils will protect against oil leaks and the development of rust as well. Synthetic motor oils can withstand a wide range of temperatures.

Conventional Oil

Conventional oil is one of the types of engine oil that comprises a synthetic blend oil. Conventional oil is generally used in older cars that have a simpler engine and mechanical systems. Conventional oil can be used independently as an oil, and it can also be used as a base along with synthetic oil to create a synthetic blend.

High Mileage Oil

High mileage oil is formulated for cars that have hit 75,000 miles or more. High mileage oil keeps a car's engine from rusting or getting corroded. It also reduces engine oil burn-off and leaks.
