Now that it’s officially September, most students around Texas should be back in their classrooms. It’s an exciting and fun time for parents, teachers and students, but it can also be a dangerous time as drivers relearn the how to interact with a new driving environment. Below we’ve put together a few tips on how to keep safe and sane this new school year, while driving your new Nissan car.

Watch for Pedestrians

There will a lot more pedestrians on the road during this time of year than during the summer. Drivers will see both parents and students making their way to your local school, which is why it’s important to:

  • Slow down when you see flashers when driving through a school zone
  • Always adhere to a crossing guard’s stop sign
  • Never pass a car that is waiting on a pedestrians
  • Keep intersections and crosswalks clear for children

Watch for Buses

The school bus will be out in full force this fall, so it’s vital to remember to respect the big, yellow behemoth and its litany of rules. This includes:

  • Never passing a stopped school bus (seriously its illegal in all 50 states)
  • Keeping at least 10 fee to distance between you and a school bus
  • Look for children in and around the bus, especially if its stopped

Watch for Bicycles

Another bit of transportation you’ll be seeing more of is the bicycle. Kids on bikes will be making their way down your neighborhood street this month, so always remember to:

  • Leave at least 3 feet between you and a cyclist when passing someone of a bike
  • Watch for children being reckless. Kids have a very poor understanding of danger, so it will be up to you to watch for them darting in and out of morning traffic
